How SSP works (2026/27)

The standard rate is £123.25 a week, paid for up to 28 weeks.
It's now paid from the first qualifying day off sick — the 3 waiting days were abolished on 6 April 2026.
The lower earnings limit is gone, so all employees are eligible regardless of how much they earn.
If you're a lower earner, SSP is the lower of 80% of your average weekly earnings or £123.25 — so you never get less than 80% of normal pay capped at the flat rate.
SSP is paid by your employer through payroll and is subject to tax and National Insurance like normal pay.
